Richard & Karl
Like Digital Media lives on the 4th floor of Truman’s Z Block on Brick Lane. They are an experience-design agency that creates innovative digital solutions for brands in a multi-channel world.

When did you join us here at Truman’s?
Towards the end of 2011.

How do you find being located at Old Truman Brewery as well as East London’s Tech City?
It's the only place to be if you're a innovative digital agency looking to be around like-minded creatives, as it is a great mix of big agencies, small boutique agencies and inventive start-ups . Also having Google and Twitter now near by really boosts the idea that East London is a centre for Digital in the UK. Plus coming out of the building onto the buzz of Brick Lane in the evenings is great.

What’s your favorite things on site? For coffee / lunch / drink?
We love the coffee (and the staff) at Rough Trade - spent far too much there over the time we've been here. L!FE Shoreditch is a great place to unwind and have some thinking space.

You’ve worked with some high profile clients as The Killers, Banksy and Westminster Cathedral! Who was most interestingly challenging to work for?
Good question! It’s hard to pick one specific one out, but the interesting challenges often come from the variety and quirks of the particular project, especially the process of getting into the personas of the artist/client and their target audience. It’s always interesting to be in their environment and get involved in their creative process and the challenges they face day to day to inform the larger project (plus we’re really nosy!).

With the digital world’s major attention focusing on mobile, what devices do you predict people would use in 5 years’ time?
I think we are well and truly into the mobile space already and brands not in focusing on mobile will have a tough time over the next 12 months. Device wise in 5 years... Mobile will be still very much apart of digital life but the really interesting things to take shape over the next few years will be how this device in our pocket communicates to everything else in our lives - our T.V., car, lights in our house and even down to our refrigerator. The Internet of Things (www.theinternetofthings.eu) or ideas around this is whats exciting about mobile and the future of digital.

What projects are you working on at the moment? What's been your all-time favorite project?
We're working on some really interesting multi-channel fashion pieces at the moment, connecting the in-store experience to online and vice-versa and replicating this across devices, locations and more. It’s great getting really deep into the user journeys in the real world as well as the digital world. As for an all-time favourite there’s no clear winner; as a team we’ve really enjoyed projects with a looser brief and a super-short timescale as the pure buzz never is stronger – pizza-fuelled late nights in the studio with the team in full creative flow are great.

Any word of advice for someone who’d want to stamp his mark/brand on the world wide web?
Very difficult to just stamp your mark these days, our daily lives are full of stream of tweets, Facebook posts, photos of cats and endless new site updates. To stand out or to at least for someone to take notice you need to have great content and as above have a great experience to back that up.

What’s the future of digital marketing?
Knowing when to communicate to your audience, being timely and appropriate. We can no longer interrupt consumers with irrelevant messages with the notion that if they see it enough times they will buy it. In the digital space brands need to understand each of their consumers and capture their attention through relevant channels with relevant rewarding messages.

What inspired you to start working with digital media?
Karl: I always wanted to design record covers and that’s why I studied Graphic design, however at college I started to play around with interaction design for CD-Roms and found this way more interesting than flat printed artwork.
Rich: I came at it as a musician trying to find innovative (i.e. cheap) ways to promote the band I was in at the time. The idea that you could self-publish online was very powerful and the freedom this gave us was very exciting, especially when we combined music with interactivity and animation.

What’s your favorite gadget??
It's not really a gadget, but out our Darth Vader helmet has pride of place in the studio.

How would you describe your studio’s creative process?
We believe heavily digital being experience lead so that’s real the starting point for and client, we have to understand the user and there needs before any design or code can be written. This process starts from a solid research base before we begin to produce experience maps that help us and the client understand the problem and the best solution we can create together. At Like Digital Media we love client collaboration and having them in the trenches with us as we unwind the creative problem and it’s working well so far. Once we have a vision and direction for the problem we then move into wireframes, prototypes and system architecture before finally moving into the detail of great design and code. We find that the results mean that the client not only gets a site that looks great but can deliver a great experience for there customers giving them a better ROI

If you won a £1,000,000,000 tomorrow morning, what would be the first thing you’d do?
Buy an original Dalek and pedal it around Brick Lane handing out champagne.

Your motto?
Making the internet look good since 2011...
