INTERVIEW WITH A PAST FREE RANGE EXHIBITOR //
This month we have the much awaited 15th annual Free Range Shows. Since its inception in 2001, Free Range has become the number one platform and launch pad for the next crop of creatives to showcase their work to both the industry and the public.
This year graduates of Art, Design, Fashion, Photography, Interior Design, and Architecture will be exhibiting from the 5th June to the 14th July.
We caught up with Zoe Maslen, a past graduate exhibitor, and chatted about how Free Range has helped propel her into a successful arts career.
Q: What have you been up to since exhibiting at Free Range?
A: At my free range exhibition I met and engaged in conversation with as many people as I could, and this is where I met my current employer. I met the creative director of Acrylicize, an art consultancy and design studio in front of my work. We engaged cards and I managed to organise an internship with them which developed into a position for me, creative support. I then managed after six months in the company to become employed permanently as the studio manager and creative, which means I spend half my time coming up with ideas and concepts for art installations and pieces for clients and the other half of my time managing the running of the studio and accounts.
Q: How did you benefit from exhibiting at Free Range?
A: I benefitted from free range much more than just getting a job out of it. The process of organising it was separate from university so it already took skills we were learning and encouraged us to use them for ourselves, not just to tick boxes for a degree. It pushes you to stand on our own two feet and see the impact of your actions. The organizational skills you acquire from this exhibition will benefit you as a candidate for jobs, it develops your social skills and confidence and most of all gets your name out there.
Q: What qualities and skills do you think are important for life as an arts graduate?
A: Being flexible and unselfish. If you don't look at the world like it owes you then people appreciate your efforts as genuine. Eventually putting the hard work in will come around and reward you even if that means putting yourself out for others and doing lots of unpaid work. See every connection you make as beneficial, not as pointless because you haven't gained any immediate results. Keeping every door open may cause a draft but you can't get through closed doors.
