Behô Studio
Backyard Market's Ethical Traders
|
|
Vanessa Provin, the founder of Behô, can be found selling her enviable statement crystal rings and handmade totes in our weekend Backyard Market. Read on to find more about how this gorgeous brand is making a difference in the fashion world.
OTB: Where did the idea for your company come from?
VP: It was whilst studying fashion in Brazil I really started to think about sustainable fashion. I won a student competition to open Fashion Week with my own sustainable clothing collection, made with organic and recycled Brazilian materials. It was then the non-sustainable practices and materials I encountered whilst working within the fashion industry that really made me think about alternative ways to produce fashion.
After a trip to India, where I visited several factories, I decided it was time for change. I moved to London around two years ago to develop my brand alongside studying an MA in Design & Environment at Goldsmiths. I am constantly inspired to find new materials and techniques for me to experiment with. I want to prove that sustainable fashion doesn't mean just hippie or tie-dye style!
OTB: Tell us more about how you incorporate ethical and sustainable business practices into your company.
VP: My company is founded on an ethical business model, in terms of both social and environmental practices. On the website and on individual labels you can find clear information about the materials (which are all natural or recycled) and the process of production for each item.
I aim to operate in a fair trade and organic way, in partnership with artisans, indigenous communities and small business in Brazil. For example, I frequently visit the artisan communities where the company seamstress works and we will co-design the products over tea and cake! I believe transparency in fashion and increased social benefit is the best way to change the way people consume and so am always working on ways for Behô to do this.
OTB: What is your favourite product?
VP: My favourite product will be arriving in a few months, as part of my research with wild rubber. You’ll have to wait a little bit to see it!
Inspired by Provin or looking to trade ethically in our markets? Say hello on social media at @trumanmarkets and @behostudio or contact markets@trumanbrewery.com for further information on trading.

Fat Buddha Yoga
Peace. Love. Look Good Naked.
|
|
This past week we waved goodbye to Jessica Skye from Fat Buddha Yoga after a great summer season where we did downward dogs all over Truman. We can't wait for her to come back when the weather gets warmer, but in the meantime here are some of her tips for staying well and healthy during this colder season...
"Winter time means time to hibernate... Don't fight the seasons eat well, rest and keep some balance during part season to avoid going under with colds and flus... being a right party pooper!
1. Stay hydrated.... Especially during the party season aim for your two litres a day (this includes hot teas to keep you toasty).
2. Load up on vitamin C with juices, fruits and vegetables to keep your immune system fighting strong.
3. Aim for 8 hrs of sleep a night... Party season can take it's toll, your body will naturally need more rest during the winter so do your best to get tucked up early on school nights.
4. Sweat it out... If you're out on the juice over the weekend, book in for a good sweat session mid-week to help flush the body of toxins.
5. Eat in line with the season... Forget salads, load up on warm winter seasonal veg, healthy grains and all things wholesome. You need that extra layer during the colder months.
6. Wrap up... Keep you head, hands, feet and lower back covered... It's where you lose most of your body's heat.
7. Have fun! Eat, drink and be merry! Don't restrict yourself too much... This is the season to have fun and indulge!
8. Come down to yoga yo! Keep the balance during the food filled holidays, find some zen, breath and be sure to keep moving with us through the winter so January doesn't hit you so hard!"

British Pop-Ups
Tusting & Cheaney 8th - 13th November
|
|
This month we’re doing a little shout out to products made in the UK, with both Tusting and Cheaney opening their doors for pop-ups on Dray Walk. With workshops and “factories” in the English countryside both brands have been around for centuries with impeccable craftsmanship and quality standing as the symbol for both brands.
Cheaney moved to their factory’s current site in Northamptonshire in 1896, allowing all aspects of shoe-making to take place under one roof. In this same factory they produced 2500 pairs a week throughout the First World War, the company even managed to flourish throughout the global depression. Now they are seen as a brand that is reinventing tradition by not romanticising the shoe-making process with fake nostalgia but rather using contemporary design to make their shoes stand out.
Tusting takes the term “family firm” to a whole new level, with the fifth generation of the family currently running the business in the English countryside. They strongly rely on their talented craftsmen and women to bring together the flawless products, it is said that since the first briefcase was made twenty years ago the cases have matured beautifully and many are still in everyday use. If they could revive any product from the archive it would be one of the “sail bags, big and simple holdalls that still carry more than almost any other bag and yet slip quietly under the radar – very English!”

What is Truman?
Space, Events, Markets...
|
|
Walking down the street you might not realize that Truman is even here, you'll know the smell of Mother Clucker's fried chicken or see another queue of people waiting outside RoughTrade to see an artist who's name you can't pronounce, or see the iconic chimney peek out of the clouds, but really there's so much more than meets the eye. With brick buildings either side of Brick Lane you can turn a corner and find a new exhibition space, market, restaurant or workspace. We let the companies speak for themselves, giving them space to fill up your calendar with important dates depending on your creative interests.
Over the past twenty years each building's regeneration has brought a total of 250 vastly different businesses to Truman. With projects like Free Range and the newly founded Gallery Six initiative we've given young creatives the space to bring their ideas to life.
