Feel-good festival Fare Healthy joins us at Truman's to kick off February the right way. Meet, move and be inspired by the likes of Madeline Shaw and Deliciously Ella whilst discovering all the latest and greatest health food brands.
From running her own catering company to co-founding FH, Rose Loyd Owen has her fingers in a number of health and wellness pies (as long as they are refined-sugar free, of course). We talk to her more about life, food and the festival below...
We hear you have a weird connection with the Truman Brewery.
One of my ancestors, Thomas Fowell Buxton, was a philanthropist and a partner at the Truman Brewing firm in the 1820s! I’ve always loved the venue and can’t wait for it to be Fair Healthy’s home next week.
Tell us more the charity work you do behind the scenes.
Our 'Root to Fruit' supper club on Saturday 4th February is zero-waste, and all profits donated to Action Against Hunger. At my catering company Peardrop, I’ve previously held charity supper clubs supporting Mind and Fare Share (search the hashtag #dinedancedonate). Seeing food needlessly thrown away has always frustrated me. I make great efforts to ensure our kitchen at Peardrop is run with a zero waste policy. 50% of bread is wasted in this country - just think of all the resources that go into producing that bread. I’d like to encourage people to have a healthy approach to the world we live in, as well as their own bodies and minds.
What was the idea behind creating Fare Healthy?
I co-founded the festival two years ago; it was in a pub in Kensal Rise and people were queuing round the block! As a chef and vegetable lover it was awesome to see all the exciting things people were doing to make healthy eating more accessible and fun, and I wanted to share this.
How did wellness and healthy eating first come into your life?
I’ve always loved cooking healthily, and as you become older I think it’s really important to look after yourself. As Londoners, endless funky exercise options have become available to us. Having never been that athletic, I discovered how more empowered working out can make you feel. My ambition with FH is to inspire, entertain and motivate people in a fun, celebratory atmosphere.
Are there any of your food and fitnesss headliners that you are a personal fan of?
I am a huge fan of all our speakers and chefs! The festival wouldn’t be the same without them. The Core Collective have amazing exercise classes. Shona Vertue is such a beacon of inspiration, I love what she stands for. As a chef, to have Skye Gyngell come and talk at my festival is a real ‘pinch me’ moment, her food and recipes are second to none. And check out Nourish Atelier, her instagram is mouthwatering!
What are you whipping up in the Peardrop kitchen at the moment?
favorite thing to do is to make Ketchup! We’ve tried fennel, beetroot and obviously tomato. It’s amazing and it lasts for ages too, it’s so versatile, you can have it with chicken, meat or fish.
Do you currently have any other projects on the go?
I hope you’re joking! I barely have time to wash my hair.

The Tattoo Collective

As Brick Lane has grown over the last 15 years, so too has the tattoo community there resurged as more focus was given to crossovers between all areas of art. Recent openings such as Seven Doors house some of the most talented artists in the world, and Lowrider Tattoo London, opened by the Chicano master Jose Lopez, has also been able to make its specialized mark on the scene. Naturally, the heart of East London and The Old Truman Brewery seems the perfect place for a blossoming tattoo convention to be.
Those attending the event will have the chance to buy originals from a variety of artists (each tattoo artist has been asked to design a piece for the show), as well as get their skin inked by some of the best. Miki himself has 90% of his body tattooed, leaving his hands, neck and face unadorned in comparison to the intricate designs that cover the remainder of his skin. Much like the artwork of professionals attending the convention, the “stories behind them are way too many,” however, those who venture in to explore London Tattoo in February might be lucky enough to uncover a couple of tales themselves.
Dale May’s powerful photography celebrating Polynesian tribal tattoo is just one example of some of the great artwork due to be exhibited alongside pop-up tattoo parlours at the London Tattoo Collective. Such imagery speaks volumes about what the convention actually represents – something beyond the simple act of inking skin, tattoos are about art, expression, culture and creativity.

For 24 years Miki Vialetto has been a publisher of two international tattoo magazines as well as a publisher of art books that now exist as part of the permanent collection of the MOMA in New York. Now he is the brains behind London’s first Tattoo Collective, which seeks to create a platform to celebrate the high quality contributions of English and Irish tattooers to the craft.

We told you to expect big things at Truman this year, and we hope we have delivered. Newly opened this week, the adidas Studio LDN is a creator space rooted in fitness and wellbeing. With its spacious wooden floors and minimalist interior this chic hub doesn't mess around when it comes to pumping those weights or getting down on the mat. A range of weekly fitness classes, adidas Runners sessions and workshops are on offer to those in the know - and if you're a sucker for shiny new fitness gear, they'll be showcasing their latest products too. With all sessions absolutely free to join and some top-notch athlete training on offer, we know where we will be spending most of our spare time this year. The comforting food that Ethiopiques serve tastes so good that it feels bad, yet in reality, this is vegan goodness at this simplest. One of their hearty salad plates is well worth a try, and is guaranteed to fill you up with a mix of cooked and raw vegetables, beans, pulses and complex carbs. However, the real specialty and star of the show is Elizabeth's injera, freshly cooked and rolled in front of each eager customer. This slightly sour and spongy Ethipian flatbread is made of teff flour: not only is it ideal for soaking leftover sauces off the plate, but it is low in gluten and high in protein, calcium and iron.

As a new year begins at Truman's we look forward to welcoming in many new faces. One addition to the Boiler House we're especially excited about is classically trained chef Nick Edmonds, who works hard to extract as much goodness as possible from any vegetable, grain or pulse he can get his hands on. Specialties include 'forbidden rice' - sprouted wild rice packed full of fibre and protein, as well as sauerkraut and homemade kimchi. The recipe for these fermented vegetables originates from both Germany and Korea, and the process helps develop natural probiotics essential for a healthy gut.

Being vegan doesn't mean you have to compromise when it comes to desserts - so long as you're on Brick Lane. Since April last year, Peanut Butter Bakery have been spoiling vegans and non-vegans alike with their handmade brioche creations. Based in the Boiler House, the small-batch donuttery rotate their fantastic flavours each weekend, meaning every visit is different. Treat yourself to cinnamon graham, banoffee, chocolate honeycomb and hot chai combinations aside from your usual classics. If you're not a doughnut person (although we highly doubt anyone can resist these babies), grab a chocolate or caramel pecan brownie.
