Baby its cold outside! We’re not sure what has happened to the weather lately, but there’s so much coming up in the next few weeks we can’t help but feel excited. Our event calendar is full of all things art, design and photography, with emerging artist exhibitions, fairs and more. Keep an eye out for the highly anticipated solo show by photographer Tommy Clarke, who will be debuting his new series ‘Iceland’, revealing images shot from a new aerial perspective. Always keen to shine a light on young talent, we'd recommend checking out Fotonow’s South West Graduate Photography Prize and PHOTOMASTERS featuring work from recent MA Photography Graduates from across the UK. Our advice? Head East for artists, galleries, collectives and creatives offering an alternative selection of art fairs.

We're always ON, follow us @trumanbrewery.
Mark Charlton

We spoke to the mixed media artist about his medium of work, being featured in The Other Art Fair and more...

Artist Mark Charlton explores mixed media with his work, after previously being a freelance animator and motion designer in the music industry. Mark's unique ability to tap into futuristic vision of space from a 50's perspective sets him apart - especially with his layered approach which sees screen print forced to react with painted and collages surfaces. We spoke with Mark about his work and future inspirations...

You’re currently based in Brighton, which you’ve cited as an artistic inspiration. Is there anything that’s intrinsically ‘Brighton’ that influences you?

I enjoy the constant optimism and free-thinking about the city. Many of the textures and colours of the city are of constant interest to me and provide a useful resource in my work. Although my work isn’t necessarily inspired by nature I find being immersed within this environment of the South Downs and the sea helps my creative process.

Within your work you explore mixed media that delves into a 1950s perspective of futuristic space exploration, where did the initial idea for this come from?

I have always been fascinated by space, the early footsteps of modern-day space travel and I’ve always been intrigued by the abundance of optimism in the 1950s era. I'm deeply interested in design and architecture of the mid-century period and enjoy reading articles about the future from this period in publications such as ‘The Eagle’ comics.

Out of all the medias you use, which do you particularly enjoy using? Are there any other medias you’d be interested in exploring further in your work?

I don’t particularly have a favourite media. I enjoy the reaction of how different medias react when applied together and have over the years developed a process of painting and printing which I still find intriguing and challenging. However, I have a fascination with abstract sculpture and would one day like to pursue the making of three-dimensional work.
