The autumn season kicks off with Artblock and Photoblock, our selection representing the spectrum of art and photography. The Other Art Fair, Moniker Art Fair, the AOP Awards all return, and we are excited to feature several indie shows too.

Here's the cut...

Fei Alexeli

Collage artist experimenting with bold, retro landscapes, exhibiting at this year's The Other Art Fair

Fei Alexeli takes retro Americana, blending it with millennial pink landscapes through the medium of collage. Through these dreamy paradises she creates an otherworldly experience for the viewer. We spoke to Fei about her influences, her identity and collaborations...

Who would you say was a major influence in the creation of your work, any contemporary artists, photographers or filmmakers?

While studying architecture, I was surfing on the internet for days trying to find inspirations for my projects. I've seen lots of artists from different disciplines that influence my aesthetics and point of view. There was no single major influence. If I had to mention a few collage artists, although our work is completely different in many aspects, I'd say Beth Hoeckel and Joe Webb. I was mesmerised the first time I saw their work.

Is there anyone within the industry today that you would like to work on a possible collaboration with?

There are too many artists that I'm in love with! From illustrators to photographers and designers. Laura Berger, Tishk Barzanji and Maria Svarbova are just a few that I follow on Instagram that I'd love to collaborate with.

Are there any other mediums that you’d like to experiment with?

I'd love the idea of moving from 2D to 3D and transforming the collages into actual spaces and installations. It's an idea that I've been working in my mind for quite a while now, trying to find the best way to communicate it visually.

How do you feel you convey your identity within your work?

Although I feel that every collage is different from the other, the elements of composition, theme and my colour palette remain and circulate in all my work. There is a mixture of Americana, universe and tropical elements blended with pastel colours and pinks that are identifiable in my collages. I'm trying to create a sense of comfort amongst the otherworldly, places that are familiar to me or even home.

Would you like to discuss an artwork with us?

The flamingo is one of my early works, back in 2012. The snowy mountain, the stones, even the texture of the whole image suggest a rough environment through which the flamingo stands alone on top of the mountain with grace. It's like saying I'm pink, I'm alone, I'm on top of the mountain and everything is gonna be alright.
