Crepe City strikes again
Saturday March 25th
|
|
Founded in 2009, Crepe City, host to the world’s largest market of exclusive and hard to find sneakers is back - dare we say it - bigger and better than ever before. Featuring special collaborations with the likes of Nike and BABY-G, this year’s event is set to attract traders and collectors of the finest kicks from around the world.
Borne out of friendship, a lot of hard work and of course a mutual love for sneakers, Crepe City is the passion project of best friends Ronal Raichura and Paul Smyth - with arts graduate Morgan Weekes joining the team in 2011. Sneaker culture has been creeping into mainstream fashion for some time now, these guys have been committed since day one, setting up the KickXchange forum in 2006 prior to setting up Crepe City, this quickly grew into one of the world’s leading forum for buying and selling sneakers. Working full time jobs and boasting modest roots, there is a real homegrown feeling that surrounds Crepe City; no flashy PR company or corporate sponsors, Crepe City has been built around partnerships that stay true to the culture. Using social media to connect with sneakerheads, the show now has a global reach, with people travelling worldwide to set up stands or to grab that special pair of kicks. The boys are also big on charity - most recently, they delighted fans by dropping a clothing line to raise money for Great Ormand Street Children's Hospital.
Now onto splashing that cash: out of an overwhelming selection of potential purchases, there will be Yeezys galore, the event coincides with #AirMaxDay so you’ll be sure to see plenty of Nike’s classic silhouette snd the adidas x Parley catches our eye. They're innovatively woven from a new fibre that transforms plastic littering the oceans into beautiful shoes that optimize class and comfort. If you're a lover of Adidas through and through you might also want to try popping around the block to trial their bouncy Ultraboost X running shoes in our new on-site adidas studio on Brick Lane.
The Japanese brand G-Shock are partnering up again this year and also have their own permanent base on our site: check out their regular Thursday evening for their infamous grime nights, G Shock Sessions.
As well as the names, the great thing about Crepe City is that trade is open to every brand. Smaller companies are also celebrated, as the event is all about those "exclusive and hard-to-find sneakers" fashionistas all over the world dream about. If you know your Air Max 97s from your Air Max 95s, this crepe community is where you want to be. Pop down to talk trainers and pick up something totally unique. |

Pete McKee Pop-Up Shop & Giveaway
Saturday 1st April - Sunday 23rd April
|
|
With work inspired by his love of vinyl, Northern nostalgia and with an equal measure of poignancy and wit, Pete Mckee brings his latest artistic venture to the Truman Brewery, inviting members of the public to step into his world, beyond the canvas and into his story...
You have a wonderful unique style; one which has attracted the attention of other esteemed creatives, from Noel Gallagher and The Arctic Monkeys to Paul Smith. How did you experiment and develop your art?
I have always enjoyed cartoons - the first time I was introduced to them was in my dad's newspaper. I would sit for hours and try to copy the Andy Capp cartoons in the back. Although my style has been refined a lot over the years, there is defiantly still a cartoon element to it. I never had any formal training, in fact, I was turned away from art school.
What is it that you feel others like about your work?
I think it's the stories. I mostly tell stories of me growing up, the places I used to go to with my parents, the music I used to listen to and the clothes I wore. Everyone had a childhood and coming from a working class background, many others have had a similar childhood, meaning the stories inmy art are ones which people can relate too.
As you have previously made clear in interviews, your work is inspired by the city you grew up in. Are there any sites, smells or local foods that are intrinsically 'Sheffield' to you?
For me it's the trees: there is a statistic out that Sheffield is the greenest city in Europe. The smell would be that of Henderson's relish, which is a condiment you can put on...well, just about anything. As for the food, it would have to be a Sheffield fishcake - potato on a layer of fish and potato again, which is then deep fried.
What inspired you to open a pop-up store, and why in London?
I have held some exhibitions in the city over the years but I have always wanted to have something open for a little longer. Normally when you put on an exhibition you are focused on the subject of that show. I wanted to be able to tell the story of my art, while replicating the shop I have in my home city. Ideally one day it would be great to have a permanent store here.
Have you created any special items specifically for your shop?
Yes! Alongside a collection of classic works, there are a new series of limited edition prints and products, including my first cycling range. There will also be some very special items available at different weekends while the shop is open, created out of collaborations with Warp Films and Shane Meadows for the 10th anniversary Channel 4's 'This is England', Oasis, The Teenage Cancer Trust and clothing company Pretty Green.
As well as the opportunity to get your hands on all of the above, Pete McKee is giving one lucky Truman subscriber the chance to win a signed copy of 'A Lost Summer' (pictured above). This is a limited edition canvas print of 25 copies taken from 'The Black and White' collection Pete has created especially for the pop-up store at The Old Truman Brewery.
To enter the giveaway;
Send your answer to the question 'Which city is Pete McKee from?' to pete@petemckee.com - the winner will be selected at random at the shop opening on Saturday 1st April.

A space to showcase your art to the world
All you need to know about 91selects - from what it is to how to get involved!

Here at Truman's we are just a tad sentimental about the origins of our Brewery turned creative quarter in East London. Times here have definitely changed over the years. You can grab a fancy coffee in every other shop you walk into, haggle for the latest designer garms at countless sample sales, shop to your hearts content, drop in to gigs, visit one of our weekend markets and play crazy golf with pumping tunes and cocktails under UV lights. However, the heart of our operation still preserves the rich history of Brick Lane - Our main reception with its iron wrought gates and cobbled yard was once the main entrance to one of the largest breweries in the world. Thousands of people pass by the building daily - but what a lot of them don't realise is that behind the lovingly maintained brickwork and glass, the Truman Brewery is now home to hundreds of creative businesses...and growing. We wanted to do something to reflect this.
91selects is a new Truman initiative that uses our glass-fronted Brick Lane site to showcase the work of London artists to the world. Our current paste up focuses on illustration: contributions happen to include a couple of fresh-pickings from our graduate co-working space, Gallery Six.
One such select, Liliane, talked to us about the inspiration behind her work:
"G6-ing is an illustration inspired by the everyday life of our creative office space Gallery Six. We spend 3.73333333rd of our week in G6 and I tried to portray the creative hard workers who I mingle with from my perspective in a playful way. We mainly sit in front of our computers, connecting ideas and people throughout our days, organizing events with thousands of people involved and I felt, they should be presented in a colourful silly drawing to take the edge of the serious work they do and show how cool people they are."
The conversation continues online: if you’ve got an interesting idea or would like to submit work everything happens on Instagram through the #91selects tag. We’re always open to submissions - if you have any questions simply pop an email over to Mia.

What you missed recently...
The Great Spitalfields Pancake Race
|
|
Annually organised by Alternative Arts, the Great Spitalfields Pancake race saw the good old East London community unite once more on Shrove Tuesday to raise money for the London Air Ambulance. Our Dray Walk gallery was awash with silly costumes and smiles - so if you fancy yourself as a pretty good pancake flipper, there's plenty of time to pick up your pan and start practicing for next year! If you need any more encouragement, participants are always awarded with a complimentary hot pancake, and we can now personally vouch for the excellency on these. Stay tuned for more from us here at Truman's - the party is just getting started where other types of crepe are concerned...
