If you were around the Truman Brewery this past week you would have noticed that the fashion on site has been brighter, bolder and even more beautiful, as we made way for the world’s leading event for fashion graduates.

Graduate Fashion Week is a four day event which features 22 catwalk shows from a total of 40 universities. Each one of the thousand students are given the chance to showcase their final year work to an array of big industry names, possible buyers and admirers alike.

The charity organisation was born 23 years ago to give fashion students from all over the world the opportunity to showcase their work in London, one of the most fashionable cities. Local universities such as University of East London were unified with universities from the rest of the UK and from fourteen other countries including America, Japan, Sri Lanka and Italy.

Responsible for launching the careers of Stella McCartney, Julien McDonald, Matthew Williamson and Truman tenant, Giles Deacon, Graduate Fashion Week plays a key role in supporting BA Fashion students in their transition from university to employment. Chloe Fuller of Norwich University of the Arts said, "It’s a great place to get your work out there, it’s a platform for people to see your work who would never see it before".

Aside from the catwalk shows, guests were also welcome to browse student’s portfolios and listen in on dozens of talks and seminars with famous brands such as Calvin Klein, Tommy Hilfiger and Vivienne Westwood herself, who held a discussion on fashion PR.

This year’s sponsors, George also held workshops demonstrating the different ways the graduates can work within the fashion industry, such as the roles of merchandiser or marketer. Speaking with Nicolas Marc of Norwich University of the Arts shortly after debuting his collection he said, "It’s been an amazing opportunity to show my work to people and get first hand opinions on it from people who don’t know the background of it. Also meeting different people from different parts of the industry, to speak to them and to see how they feel I could fit into their expert areas".

The move to our creative hub proved a success as ticket sales rose by significantly. The change of venue also seemed to be a positive move amongst the students too, Nicolas Marc added, "Last year, I didn’t really like Graduate Fashion Week [at the old venue], but I like how this venue feels quite industrial and that’s what a lot of the students are about, they’re new, they’re up and coming, we don’t want it to feel too prim and proper, here has more of a rustic feel which goes nicely with Graduate Fashion Week".

To round it all off, each year GFW ends with the acclaimed Gala Award show. Awards are given out to Best Womenswear, Best Menswear, and the all-important Gold Award, which will be handed over by George. The award includes a £10,000 prize to help launch the winner’s career, plus an internship at George House in which time they will design a collection for the brand. With the first ever winner of this award being Christopher Bailey, now CEO and creative director of Burberry, it’s proven that the result of winning it can be truly life changing for the successful graduate.
